Today in Wheeling History: May 1--The Bellaire packet Princess, with around forty passengers on board, was seriously damaged when it was hit by the towboat Beaver on the Ohio River near the Princess' destination of Wheeling's LaBelle Mill landing (1887). Although the collision appears to have been the fault of the Beaver, local inspectors Ritz and Thomas will investigate. The Princess was then converted into a towboat. She operated on the Muskingum River until she sank in 1901. Captain T.J. Garlick purchased the wreck of the Princess and dismantled it. (https://rb.gy/cok0w) (https://rb.gy/50n2i)
