King Solomon "Sol" White, born in Bellaire, Ohio in 1868, was a pioneering African American baseball player, manager, and executive who played a crucial role in the early history of the Negro Leagues. He began his career playing for various teams in the Ohio Valley, including the Wheeling Green Stockings, before becoming a key figure in the establishment and success of the Philadelphia Giants, leading them to multiple championships. White's most significant contribution to baseball history was his book, "Sol White's Official Base Ball Guide," published in 1907, which chronicled the early years of Black professional baseball and remains an invaluable resource for understanding the era. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, White remains the only Wheeling ballplayer to receive this honor, cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in the sport.
