The Heritage Music BluesFest was founded in 2001 by Bruce Wheeler, who envisioned a world-class blues festival in Wheeling despite the city lacking a formal blues scene. Held annually at Heritage Port along the Ohio River, the festival quickly gained national recognition for its high-caliber lineup and intimate atmosphere. Promoted as “A Weekend of Award-Winning Blues,” it features two stages: the Main Stage hosts Grammy winners and Blues Music Award recipients, while the Second Stage showcases regional talent from West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
The festival has welcomed legends like Shemekia Copeland, Popa Chubby, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, and Matt Schofield. It also highlights emerging artists through the International Blues Challenge (IBC), giving a platform to rising stars like Billy the Kid and Piper & the Hard Times. The event’s family-run vibe—Wheeler’s wife, daughter, and son all help manage operations—adds to its charm. Over the years, fans from 25 states and four countries have made the pilgrimage to Wheeling for the August celebration.
Beyond music, the festival supports community causes, such as donating proceeds to the Wheeling Homeless Coalition during special performances. It remains a cornerstone of Wheeling’s cultural identity and a beacon for blues lovers nationwide.
