The Centre Market Square Historic District in Wheeling, West Virginia, is a vibrant and historically significant area that showcases a variety of architectural styles and cultural heritage. The district encompasses roughly Market Street between 20th and 23rd Streets, as well as parts of Main, Chapline, Eoff, and Charles Streets. Established in the mid-19th century, the district includes 181 contributing buildings, with notable structures such as the Second Presbyterian Church (1850), St. Alphonsus Church and School (1875, 1887), and the Wheeling Public Library (1911). The Centre Market itself, built in 1853, is a focal point of the district and serves as a hub for local commerce and community events. The market features a variety of shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, offering a unique shopping and dining experience. The district's charming cobblestone streets and historic architecture add to its appeal, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The Centre Market Square Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 12, 1984, with a boundary increase in 1987. This designation recognizes the district's historical and architectural significance and helps preserve its unique character for future generations.
