Ryan James Ferns was born on December 2, 1982, in Wheeling, West Virginia. He attended Wheeling Jesuit University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Ferns began his political career as a member of the Democratic Party, being elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 2010. However, in 2013, he switched his allegiance to the Republican Party. In 2014, he successfully ran for the West Virginia Senate, representing the 1st district. During his tenure, he was chosen as the West Virginia Senate Majority Leader in December 2016.
Ferns' political career was not without controversy. In 2012, he was arrested for drunken driving in Wheeling, with a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit. Despite this, he was reelected to the House of Delegates later that year. In the 2018 election, Ferns was defeated by Democratic candidate William J. Ihlenfeld II. Outside of politics, Ferns is a physical therapist and the founder of The Healthplex, a functional medicine practice in Wheeling. His professional experience includes working for Genesis HealthCare and serving as the president of Ryan's Rentals, LLC.
