Mount Zion Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia, was dedicated on July 3, 1864, by Zion's Lutheran Church. Located on Fairmont Avenue, the cemetery spans about 6-7 acres and was originally purchased to meet the burial needs of the community. It has historical significance, with at least 138 Civil War veterans interred there. The cemetery played an important role in Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) ceremonies, particularly for Civil War veterans. Over time, the cemetery has faced challenges including neglect and weather-related damage. In April 2024, severe storms and flooding caused significant damage, destroying about 200 tombstones. The cemetery is now managed by a volunteer group, the Wheeling Mt. Zion Cemetery Corporation, which has been maintaining the grounds and conducting burials since 2015.
