Jack Canfield was born on August 19, 1944, in Fort Worth, Texas. He spent his formative teenage years in Wheeling, West Virginia, where he attended Linsly Military Institute from fifth grade through graduation in 1962. Growing up, Canfield experienced economic hardship, living in his grandmother's attic for years after his parents' divorce when he was six. His stepfather's philosophy was one of self-reliance, giving young Jack $20 when he left for college with the admonition to look to "the end of your own arm" for help. Despite financial challenges, Canfield worked his way through high school as a lifeguard at the country club pool, giving him a unique perspective of being "in but not of" the wealthier social circles. At Linsly, he excelled academically and athletically, playing football as an honorable mention all-state end. He graduated alongside 46 other cadets, including classmates Dana Hershey (valedictorian) and William Kolibash (salutatorian). Canfield went on to Harvard University on a football scholarship, earning his B.A. in Chinese History in 1966, followed by his M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1973. He became one of America's most influential motivational speakers and authors, co-creating the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series which has sold over 500 million copies in 43 languages worldwide. He holds a Guinness World Record for having seven books on the New York Times bestseller list simultaneously and authored "The Success Principles," among many other works.
