Henry Schmulbach (1844-1915) was a prominent brewer and businessman in Wheeling, West Virginia. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Wheeling with his family as a child and quickly became integrated into the thriving German immigrant community in the Northern Panhandle. Schmulbach began his career working with his uncle in the retail grocery business before transitioning to the wholesale liquor trade.
In 1881, Schmulbach acquired the controlling interest in the Nail City Brewery, which he renamed the Schmulbach Brewing Company. Under his leadership, the brewery's capacity increased to 200,000 barrels annually, making it one of the largest in the state. Schmulbach was also involved in various other business ventures, including serving as president of the German Bank (now WesBanco), the Wheeling Bridge Company, and local telephone and streetcar companies.
Schmulbach's contributions to Wheeling extended beyond his business endeavors. He established Mozart Park, an amusement park on a hill overlooking South Wheeling, to promote his beer and bolster streetcar ridership. The park featured an inclined railway, a roller coaster, a bowling alley, and a dance pavilion, becoming a major attraction in the area. Additionally, Schmulbach constructed the Schmulbach Building, West Virginia's first high-rise office building, which remains a Wheeling landmark today.
Henry Schmulbach passed away on August 13, 1915, at his country home near Wheeling. His legacy as a successful entrepreneur and community leader continues to be remembered in Wheeling. His contributions to the city's business landscape and his efforts to enhance the community's recreational offerings have left a lasting impact on the region.
