A Union soldier named Huston, who had deserted twice, was shot and killed inside the Atheneum prison in Wheeling. Huston was allegedly causing a disturbance and trying to escape through a hole in the floor when a guard named Samuel Coats fired at him, striking him in the arm and heart. There are differing opinions on whether Huston was mentally unstable or intentionally trying to flee. His body remained lying on a bunk near where he was killed, covered by a blanket. Religious services would be held in the prison. (https://tinyurl.com/3w9ynb97) (https://tinyurl.com/59mvkam9) (https://tinyurl.com/yc69skvf)
