Today in Wheeling History: August 1--A festival was held in Wheeling to honor Carlin's Battery (1863).
The Festival held in honor of Carlin's Wheeling Battery was a remarkable success, surpassing even the most optimistic financial expectations of its organizers. The organizing committee's diligent efforts and the orderly and well-arranged event contributed to its triumph. Special recognition is due to James M. Wheat, Jr., for his significant role in raising funds to acquire musical instruments for the Battery's band. The instruments were presented by A. W.
