Sara Lucy Bagby Johnson (1843-1906) was the last slave prosecuted under the Fugitive Slave Act in the United States. Born in Virginia, she was purchased by John Goshorn of Wheeling in 1852 and later given to his son. Lucy escaped to freedom via the Underground Railroad, but was arrested in 1861 and taken back to Wheeling. During the Civil War, she gained her freedom, married a Union soldier, and settled in Pittsburgh before eventually moving to Cleveland, where she lived until her death in 1906.
