Thomas Bell “Tom” Sweeney Jr. was born on November 18, 1903, in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. He was a prominent Republican politician and businessman with deep roots in Wheeling’s history. Sweeney Jr. graduated from Yale University in 1926 and was actively involved in various civic and political activities throughout his life. He served as a member of the West Virginia Senate from the 1st District from 1939 to 1942.
Sweeney Jr. was the Republican nominee for the United States Senate in 1940, 1946, and 1954, although he was not successful in these elections. He also ran for the United States House of Representatives from the 1st District in 1968. Additionally, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1948, 1956, and 1960.
During World War II, Sweeney Jr. served as a US Navy Air Navigator, participating in all three major war zones. His contributions to Wheeling’s political landscape were significant, and he remained an influential figure in the community until his death on September 8, 1973, in Orlando, Florida. Sweeney Jr. was buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
