Today in Wheeling History: July 18—Wheeling Jesuit College officially becomes Wheeling Jesuit University, marking its transition to university status (1996).
Founded in 1954 as Wheeling College through a partnership between the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, the institution opened its doors to students in 1955. Originally staffed by Jesuit priests and lay professors, the college quickly grew in size and academic scope. In 1988, it was renamed Wheeling Jesuit College to reflect its Jesuit affiliation more prominently. On July 18, 1996, the institution achieved university status and was officially renamed Wheeling Jesuit University, signifying its expanded academic offerings and graduate programs.
The transition to university status reflected decades of growth, including the development of new facilities, such as the Erma Ora Byrd Center for Educational Technologies and the Robert C. Byrd National Technology Transfer Center. These additions supported the university’s mission to integrate classical knowledge with Christian revelation and regional economic development. Wheeling Jesuit University became known for its programs in nursing, physical therapy, and liberal arts, and it remained the only Catholic institution of higher learning in West Virginia.
In 2019, the university ended its Jesuit affiliation and was renamed Wheeling University. Despite these changes, its legacy as a Jesuit-founded institution continues to shape its identity and mission.
