On July 11, 1930, a significant community meeting was held at Simpson M.E. Church in Wheeling, as reported in The Afro-American newspaper on July 19, 1930. The gathering was organized to protest the inadequate school and recreational facilities provided for the African American community. As a result of this meeting, two committees were formed to address these issues. The first committee, consisting of religious leaders and community members, was tasked with presenting their concerns to the school board. The second committee, also comprising a mix of religious and community figures, was appointed to approach the city council with requests for playground improvements. This event highlights the organized efforts of the African American community in Wheeling to advocate for better resources and opportunities during this period.
