Morris Horkheimer (1848-1912) was a prominent businessman and civic leader in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was born in Freudental, Landkreis Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1862, settling in Wheeling. Horkheimer was involved in various business ventures, most notably wool buying, and founded the firm Horkheimer Brothers. He was also connected to the Baer Grocer Company and other local businesses. Beyond his business activities, Horkheimer was active in community affairs, politics as a Republican, and charitable causes. He served as a general on the staffs of three West Virginia governors. Known for his integrity, Horkheimer was a widely respected figure in Wheeling until his death from diabetes at age 63 while staying in Atlantic City.
