Richard Robertson was born on November 7, 1845, in Hagerstown, Maryland. He moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, with his family in 1849. Robertson left school at age 14 to begin an apprenticeship as a printer. He worked for several Wheeling newspapers over his career, including establishing the Wheeling Sunday News Letter which later became the Wheeling News. Robertson served in the Union Army during the Civil War in Company C, 4th West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry and Company H, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery, attaining the rank of colonel. After the war, he returned to work as a printer and newspaperman. Robertson was elected clerk of Ohio County for two terms, starting in 1888. He was involved in Republican politics and labor organizing in Wheeling. Robertson died on January 18, 1928, at age 82 in Wheeling. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
