Today in Wheeling History: December 22--The dedication of the second of the three St. John's Evangelical Protestant churches took place (1872).

In 1835, German pioneers in Wheeling began holding religious services led by visiting pastors. In 1836, Rev. Andreas Schwartz became the first resident pastor and the First German Lutheran Church was formally organized and built at the current site of the Laughlin Memorial Chapel on 18th Street. In 1870, after a merger, the name changed to St. John's German Evangelical Protestant Church. A larger church was built at 17th and Market Streets and dedicated on December 22, 1872. In 1906, the railroad purchased this property, so a new Gothic church was built at 22nd and Chapline Streets and dedicated on September 20, 1908. In 1961, after a church merger, the name changed to St. John's United Church of Christ. In 2006, the church severed UCC ties and reverted to St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church. In 2016, the name became St. John's Centre Wheeling Fellowship and then, in 2019, it changed to its current name of Centre Wheeling Fellowship.
