Zanesburg, which was later renamed Wheeling, was officially recognized by the Virginia General Assembly on December 25, 1795. The town was named after Ebenezer Zane, who was the first white settler in the area. Zane had claimed the land through tomahawk rights and established the first settlement in 1769. The town was incorporated in 1805.
