Robert Lee Hull was born in December 1921 in Wheeling, West Virginia, to parents Robert J. Hull and Emma Leonard Hull. He had two younger brothers, James and Thomas. Hull graduated Wheeling High School in 1939 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 10, 1940. He was assigned to the 72nd Pursuit Squadron stationed at Wheeler Field in Hawaii. On December 7, 1941, Private Hull was wounded during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He passed away the next day on December 8, 1941, at age 19. Hull was initially buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific Honolulu, Hawaii, but later re-interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1947. He was awarded a Purple Heart medal posthumously for his service and sacrifice. In his brief but honorable life, Hull represented his state and country as a soldier during a pivotal moment in history.
