On November 8, 1861, Ella Poole of Wheeling, who was suspected of treasonous correspondence with Confederates, was escorted by a detective from Louisville, Kentucky, to Washington, D.C. under orders from General William Tecumseh Sherman. Ella had previously been arrested by Marshal E.M. Norton in Wheeling in October 1861, but managed to escape from house arrest. Though her mother and sister were also briefly detained as alleged accomplices, they were released after friends of Ella promised Ella would be surrendered. The incident reveals how Ella and her female relatives and friends appeared to exploit gender stereotypes about honesty and vulnerability to evade punishment amidst the pressures of the Civil War.
