The Elliott Commercial School, founded by W. B. Elliott in 1900, was a pioneering institution in Wheeling, West Virginia, known for its instruction in Gregg Shorthand and the touch system of typewriting. Elliott, who also established similar schools in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in Fairmont, Clarksburg, Martinsburg, and Charleston, West Virginia, was a prominent figure in the local community, serving in various leadership roles. On April 8, 1914, just two days after the Princess Theater opened in the Hawley Building, the Elliott Commercial School held its first classes in the same building, marking a significant moment in the school's history and its impact on education and business skills development in the region.
