The Children's Home of Wheeling in Wheeling, West Virginia, traces its origins back to February 7, 1870, when Reverend S.B. Barnitz proposed establishing a home for neglected and orphaned children at a meeting of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). A committee was formed, comprised of Samuel Laughlin, William B. Simpson, Benjamin Davenport, and M.W. Miller, with each contributing $100. On March 21, 1870, this committee obtained a charter and held a public meeting the next day to formalize the organization. From 1870 to 1989, the Children's Home provided services to both males and females in need of residential placement, serving as an orphanage and haven. In 1989, the strategic decision was made to focus exclusively on serving males. Today, while still supporting youth, the Children's Home of Wheeling has evolved to offer a diverse range of services beyond just residential placement.
