Dr. Robert Eugene Jones was born on December 22, 1941, in Scribner, Nebraska. He played college football at the University of Nebraska before being drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1964. Jones played for the Wheeling Ironmen semi-pro team from 1964-1967, helping lead them to two championships. He later re-signed with the Washington Redskins in 1965. After retiring from football, Jones settled down in Wheeling, where he worked as a surgeon at Wheeling Hospital. As a surgeon, he operated on several of his former Wheeling Ironmen teammates. Robert Jones died on June 9, 2020 in Wheeling, West Virginia and was buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.
