Horne's Department Store, a family-owned ladies' specialty shop, was a beloved institution in Wheeling, West Virginia for nearly 70 years. Founded by Max L. Horne and his wife Jean in 1931, the store grew from a small 1,200-square-foot space to become the largest women's specialty store in the state. Through the decades, Horne's survived the Great Depression, multiple wars, and changes in the retail landscape, while maintaining a commitment to exceptional customer service and employee satisfaction.
In 1996, Fred and Audrey Horne, who had been running the business, announced their decision to close the store and retire. The news was met with an outpouring of emotion from loyal customers and employees alike, many of whom shared heartfelt memories of their experiences at Horne's. The store's legacy of integrity, service, responsibility, and quality, as well as its role in the lives of generations of Wheeling residents, will be remembered long after its doors have closed.
