William Wilson Irwin was born in 1863 in Danville, Kentucky. He moved to Wheeling, West Virginia where he worked as a druggist before being appointed postmaster in 1912. Irwin served extensively in civic roles including 8 years on Wheeling's city council, as a county commissioner, and as sheriff of Ohio County from 1901-1905. A prominent Mason, he served as Imperial Potentate of the Shriners of North America from 1913-1914. Active in the Democratic Party, he married Mary Ott in 1889 and together they raised one daughter. Irwin passed away in 1924 while visiting Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Wheeling's Greenwood Cemetery alongside his wife Mary. Irwin is remembered for his business success, Masonic leadership, decades of public service to Wheeling, and lifelong civic engagement.
