Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, started his journey from Hiram, Ohio on April 1, 1832, accompanied by Newel K. Whitney, Peter Whitmer, and Jesse Gause. To avoid a mob in the Kirtland area, they took an alternate route, stopping first in Warren, Ohio, where they were joined by Sidney Rigdon. The group then proceeded to Wellsville, Ohio, arriving the next day, and reached Steubenville, Ohio, on April 3. On April 4, 1832, they took passage on an unnamed steamboat in Steubenville, traveling to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), where Smith purchased paper for the church's press in Jackson County, Missouri. This paper was later used to publish the Book of Commandments. After concluding their business in Wheeling, the group boarded the steamer Trenton to continue their journey to Missouri.
