On October 6, 1895, the cornerstone laying ceremony for the original St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Elm Grove was held. The ceremony was led by Most Rev. Archbishop John J. Kain of St. Louis, who was visiting after attending a Eucharistic Congress. Bishop Donahue, who was supposed to lead the ceremony, had to attend another church dedication in Mannington. The event drew an unexpectedly large crowd, likely due to the nice weather and desire to see Archbishop Kain. The Knights of St. George, Ancient Order of Hibernians, German Knights of St. George, St. Alphonsus Society, and St. Stanislaus Polish Catholic Society of St. Mary's parish paraded into town accompanied by bands. Archbishop Kain processed from the orphanage to the church site wearing full archiepiscopal vestments and accompanied by clergy. In the cornerstone cavity were placed copies of Wheeling newsp apers, The Church Calendar, a clergy roster, list of families in the new parish, coins, and other items. (https://tinyurl.com/5n84nkea)
