M.J. McFadden was born Manasseh Joseph McFadden on February 10, 1860, in Mount Aetna, Berks County, Pennsylvania. His parents moved to Pittsburgh when he was 12 years old, where he worked as a clerk in a gentleman's furnishing store from 1876 to 1883. In 1883, McFadden moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, and opened his own furnishing store. In 1889, he added hats and caps. In 1907, McFadden purchased land at 1122-1124 Market Street in Wheeling and erected the McFadden Building, which opened in 1909. He ran his store there until 1937, when he leased the building to J.C. Penney. After J.C. Penney moved out, the building became home to Chris Miller Furniture. M.J. McFadden passed away on December 16, 1951, in Wheeling at the age of 91. He is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
