John Joseph Swint served as Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling from 1922 until his death in 1962. As "God's Bricklayer," he established 25 parishes, 7 missions, 2 hospitals, 2 nursing homes, a children's home, and Catholic Charities in the diocese. He held synods, invited religious orders to the area, and constructed a new St. Joseph's Cathedral among over 80 other building projects. Swint's most significant contribution was founding Wheeling College in 1954 through a partnership between the diocese and Maryland Province Jesuits. He secured the land and diocesan funding while the Jesuits agreed to operate the new college. Swint condemned activities he saw as un-Catholic, like the Miss America pageant and birth control, though not always successfully. He was named an archbishop in 1954 by Pope Pius XII in honor of his work advancing Catholic education.
