Archibald W. Campbell (1833-1899) was a prominent newspaper editor, leader in the West Virginia statehood movement, and member of the Republican Party. He was born in Ohio and graduated from Bethany College and Hamilton College Law School. Campbell became the editor of the Wheeling Daily Intelligencer and used the newspaper to support Republican causes, including abolition of slavery and preservation of the Union. He strongly opposed Virginia's secession and worked for the creation of the Reorganized Government of Virginia and the formation of West Virginia. Campbell played a role in convincing President Lincoln to sign the West Virginia statehood bill. In his later years, he retired from the newspaper and passed away in Missouri.
