The First English Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wheeling, West Virginia was established in 1860 with 24 charter members. Its first pastor was Rev. Thomas W. Dosh. After meeting in various rented spaces, the congregation built its first chapel in 1870. The chapel was later remodeled and expanded in the 1890s under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Schwarm. Other influential early pastors included Rev. Samuel Bacon Barnitz and Rev. E.H. Dornblaser. Over its first 100 years, the church grew steadily and was active in founding other Lutheran congregations in the Wheeling area. It supported missionary work abroad and made significant building upgrades and improvements. Key milestones included establishing a parsonage in 1922 under Rev. Charles G. Aurand, who helped grow church membership and organizations.
The Wheeling Life Hub purchased the First English Evangelical Lutheran Church in May 23, 2023, to help the homeless and prevent homelessness.
