A tragic accident occurred in Wheeling in which Jacob Watson and four boys - George Powell, Samuel Dudley, Isaac Freeze, and Alonzo Dobbins - drowned after their overloaded sand scow capsized in the Ohio River. Watson and the boys were crossing the river when a passing boat caused waves that swamped their boat. Despite Watson's pleas for help and heroic rescue efforts by bystanders John Moran, Thomas Finney and James Manton, Watson and the four boys were unable to be saved and perished.
