Today in Wheeling History: August 19--At the commencement of the Second Session of the Second Wheeling Convention, Reverend Gideon Martin from the Methodist Episcopal Church delivers the opening prayer (1861).
Gideon Martin (1815-1902) was born in what is present-day Barbour County, West Virginia. His journey led him to become a licensed preacher within the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1836. He dedicated his efforts to ministering in what he characterized as the most challenging and demanding circuits within West Virginia.
