Earl Summers, Jr. was a talented violinist from Wheeling who had a lifelong career in music. He joined the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra with his father in 1929 at age 12 and later became the concertmaster, serving for over 60 years. Summers also performed with orchestras in Columbus, Pittsburgh, and on radio programs. Known as "Wheeling's Mr. Music", he played with many famous musicians and led his own jazz orchestra locally. Summers came from a musical family, with his grandfather and father being musicians too. Outside of performing, he worked for Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company for decades. Today in Wheeling History: August 23—Earl Summers, Jr., “Wheeling’s Mr. Music,” was honored by the City of Wheeling when Mayor Thomas J. Baller proclaimed “Earl Summers, Jr. Day” (1990).
