James McHenry Jones (August 28, 1859 – September 22, 1909) was a prominent American educator, school administrator, businessman, and minister. He served as the principal of Lincoln School in Wheeling, West Virginia, and later became the third principal (considered the third president) of the West Virginia Colored Institute (now West Virginia State University). Jones was influential in advancing African-American education and civil rights in the region, and his efforts were recognized with honorary degrees from Wilberforce University and Rust College. He was also involved in the founding of one of the first African American-owned fossil fuel companies in the United States, the Wilgera Oil and Gas Company. Jones's legacy lives on, and the West Virginia State University honors him with Jones Hall, a building on their campus named in his memory.
