A group of West Virginia state legislature members in Wheeling volunteered on Friday, August 1st to help pursue the Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan during his raid through Indiana and Ohio. They marched around Wheeling but did not find Morgan. On August 2nd, they then sailed up the Ohio River searching for him, with some humorous adventures along the way. After getting horses on the Ohio side, a scouting party followed Morgan's trail, linking up with Union cavalry already pursuing him. They traveled all day Sunday, August 2nd, but did not reach Morgan's surrender point until Monday morning (August 3rd), encountering massive crowds eager to see the captured Morgan. The scouting party then returned to their ship and Wheeling, reporting back on Tuesday, August 4th after failing to find Morgan themselves but learning of his surrender.
