Today in Wheeling History: August 3--Cornerstone of Saint Ladislaus Roman Catholic Church laid (1902).
St. Ladislaus Catholic Church was a central and vital institution for Wheeling's Polish community from its founding in 1903 until its closure in 1995. It catered to the increasing Polish migration, offering services in their native language. The church building now houses the Abundant Life Baptist Church, remaining accessible to visitors. Before its establishment, many Polish residents attended St. Alphonsus Church, a German Parish, which caused language barriers and tensions within the community. To address this, the Polish residents established the first national Polish parish in their diocese, dedicated as St. Ladislaus in 1903. The church also housed a school and various social groups that made it the hub of the Polish community in South Wheeling.
