Former Ohio County Circuit Court Judge George W. Thompson had Governor Pierpoint arrested in Bridgeport, Ohio, and charged with false imprisonment, seeking $10,000 in damages, in what seemed to be an attempt to repeatedly harass and annoy Pierpoint and Col. Darr, though Pierpoint promptly posted bail and continued on his way to Washington.
George Western Thompson (1806-1888) was a lawyer, judge, and politician in Virginia (later West Virginia). He served as a U.S. Congressman 1851-1852 before becoming a Virginia circuit court judge. Thompson resigned from the judiciary in 1861, when he questioned the constitutionality of the Restored Government of Virginia and the creation of West Virginia. As a result, Governor Pierpont removed Thompson from the bench and engineered his imprisonment. Thompson’s sons fought for the Confederacy while he retired to his estate near Wheeling.
