John Rodgers Meigs (1842-1864) was the son of Union Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs. He fought at Bull Run while a West Point cadet, graduated first in his class in 1863, and served as an engineer and aide to several Union generals. Meigs was killed by Confederate scouts behind enemy lines near Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1864, leading to the burning of Dayton, Virginia, in retaliation. Today in Wheeling History: August 4--Lieutenant John R. Meigs, the son of Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs, and newly designated chief engineer on General Benjamin Kelley's staff, has arrived at the McLure House in Wheeling (1863).
