Today in Wheeling History: August 4--Charles Lindbergh made a historic stop in Wheeling, West Virginia, during his nationwide tour after his solo transatlantic flight (1927). After landing his "Spirit of St. Louis" plane at Moundsville's Langin Field, Lindbergh traveled to Wheeling by motorcade. He addressed the crowds at Wheeling Island's West Virginia State Fairgrounds, emphasizing the importance of investing in commercial aviation by building additional airports. Lindbergh made a stop at Linsly Military Institute and placed a wreath at the base of the Aviator Statue. He also attended a banquet given in his honor at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.
