Today in Wheeling History: August 5-- Soldiers apprehended the ringleaders of a mob that had assaulted a security guard at a theater performance in Wheeling's Washington Hall (1863).
According to show people, the people of Wheeling had a reputation for being very disruptive and disorderly at public events, frequently interrupting performances with shouts and whistles. This was a major issue at the theater in Washington Hall, where rowdy crowds would attend shows just to cause disturbances. One recent incident involved special policeman John Downs being severely beaten when trying to eject an unruly patron, nearly causing a riot before soldiers seized the rioters.
