During the Lincoln Day celebration on February 9, 1950, U.S. Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy delivered a speech to the Ohio County Republican Women's Club at Wheeling's McLure Hotel. Originally intending to discuss housing, McCarthy was advised by former U.S. Sen. Francis Love to focus on the dangers of communism instead. This decision launched the 1950s red scare and propelled McCarthy into the national spotlight, where he would remain for four years.
