Today in Wheeling History: January 14—Dominick M. Carey, a prominent contractor from Cleveland, Ohio, tragically drowned in a work accident at Wheeling’s Main Street Stone Bridge construction site (1892).
The incident occurred when the tramway Mr. Carey was standing on collapsed, plunging him into the water. Despite efforts to locate his body, the strong current and debris hindered the search. Mr. Carey's death deeply saddened the community, as he was highly regarded for his kindness and professionalism. He left behind a wife and three children. His contracting firm, Paige, Carey & Company continued its work under the surviving partners.
