A fire broke out at the Baltimore & Ohio depot and eating house in Benwood, believed to be caused by sparks from a passing train. An immediate telegraph was sent to Wheeling, and Captain Davries, along with several other Baltimore & Ohio officials, swiftly departed the city around 10:20 pm on an engine. They arrived at the fire location within approximately fifteen minutes, coinciding with the collapse of the roof. The building, a two-story frame structure, was quickly consumed, and despite efforts to save movable property, the entire structure was destroyed. The building, considered inadequate for the station's needs, was valued at $2,000 and had no insurance. While sympathizing with the owner's loss, residents and patrons expressed hope that a new and suitable structure would replace it. (https://rb.gy/smat2)
