Thayer Melvin was an American lawyer, politician, and judge from West Virginia. He served as the fourth Attorney General of West Virginia from 1867 to 1869 and twice as the presiding circuit judge of West Virginia's First Judicial District from 1869 to 1881 and 1899 to 1906. Melvin was born in 1835 and began studying law at the age of 17. During the American Civil War, he served in the Union Army and was captured by Confederate partisans in 1865. After the war, Melvin held various legal positions and was elected as the Attorney General of West Virginia. He later became a circuit judge and practiced law in Wheeling.
