Today in Wheeling History: July 4—The Guards and Riflemen gave a July 4th celebration in a grove on Wheeling Island (1842). The event followed a Battalion parade and featured the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Sergeant A. S. Glenn and an address by Lieutenant J. S. Lowry. Afterward, the two companies, accompanied by many citizens, went to Mr. Glime's hotel, where they enjoyed a lavish dinner. The festivities included thirteen toasts and an original ode delivered by Mr. Hiram Kaine. (https://rb.gy/q8n26)
