E.B. Carney was a prominent hotel manager and owner in Wheeling, West Virginia. Born on March 12, 1852, in Frostburg, Maryland, he began his career in the hotel industry at a young age, initially managing the Queen City Hotel in Cumberland, Maryland and the Deer Park Hotel in Deer Park, Maryland, both owned by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
Carney moved to Wheeling around 1890, where he managed the Fort Henry Club for a time before taking over management of the Windsor Hotel on Water Street. In 1900, he purchased the Windsor Hotel outright and continued to operate it until 1914, when the Windsor Hotel Company was formed. Carney stayed on as manager until his retirement in 1921, but remained a stockholder and president of the company until his death.
E.B. Carney married Mary Elizabeth Mong, the daughter of Captain and Mrs. Thomas Henry Mong, pioneer residents of Wheeling. The couple had two daughters, Helen Sheridan and Mrs. Russell Irvine, and three grandchildren.
Carney was a member of St. Joseph's Cathedral, the Knights of Columbus, and the Wheeling Lodge No. 28 B.P.O. Elks. Well-respected in the community, he passed away on August 8, 1927, at the age of 75 in the Ohio Valley General Hospital after a long illness. He was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.
