William Burrus was born on December 13, 1936, in Wheeling, WV, graduated with honors from Lincoln High School in 1954 and attended West Virginia State College. He served in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division and the 4th Armored Tank Division from 1954 to 1957 and had an illustrious 53-year career at the U.S. Postal Service, starting in 1954. Notably, he held the position of Executive Vice President of the American Postal Workers Union for 21 years (1980-2001) and then served as National President for 9 years (2001-2010). Recognized for his influence, he was named multiple times by Ebony magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans. Burrus was also a published author, writing an autobiography titled "My Journey: a Postal & Unique Experience" and a book called "Black History We Remember." He passed away on May 19, 2018.
