Jodi Applegate is an American broadcast journalist born on May 2, 1964 in Wheeling, West Virginia. Raised in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, in an Irish American Catholic family, she graduated from Moon Area High School in 1982 and later received a degree in television and film from New York University. Applegate's career has included working as an anchor at various local stations as well as nationally for MSNBC and NBC News. She married New York Yankees television broadcaster Michael Kay in 2011, with whom she has two children born via surrogate.
Applegate's personal life story includes a surprising discovery about her origins. She grew up believing she was adopted, as this is what her mother had always told her. However, after her mother passed away from cancer when Applegate was 17, she uncovered the truth - her mother was actually her biological parent.
It turned out that Applegate was conceived while her mother was single. Her mother hid the pregnancy and later returned to their hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia, with baby Jodi, telling everyone, including Jodi herself, that she had adopted the child. Applegate did not learn the reality of the situation until after her mother's death.
In 2008, on the anniversary of her mother's passing, Applegate visited Wheeling to investigate her secretive mother's life and uncover more details about her own shrouded past. This emotional journey of discovery was documented in a special Mother's Day segment on Good Day New York, the morning show Applegate was anchoring at the time on NYC's WNYW station. The revelations about her mother and her own origins undoubtedly reshaped Applegate's understanding of her identity and family history.
