Today in Wheeling History: May 29—Adams Express robbers sentenced and directed to imprisonment in the Ohio County Jail in Wheeling (1865).
Abner Marks, the perpetrator who robbed the Adams Express Company safe in Grafton, West Virginia in October 1864, was recently sentenced on May 29, 1865. The Taylor County Court in Pruntytown sentenced Marks to seven years of imprisonment in the Ohio County Jail located in Wheeling. Two other individuals, Arthur Resley and Charles Meredith, were also sentenced as accessories to the robbery, receiving four years of imprisonment each. Fortunately, the stolen money, amounting to fifteen thousand dollars, had been previously recovered by Allen Pinkerton, a member of the national police agency based in Chicago, Illinois. Pinkerton successfully detected and apprehended the culprits involved.
